Discourse structure and narration: A diachronic view from Germanic

What it is about

The volume asks how grammatical devices organise narrative text across Germanic languages (German, Dutch, English and Icelandic) over time. The introduction sets out narration as a text type, a discourse mode and a discourse relation. The eight papers cover left dislocation and the pluperfect in German, clause-combining with da and so in translated German and Dutch, the progressive in Icelandic, light adverbs such as þá, þar and nú in Old Icelandic, and verb-first declaratives. Two English chapters are relevant. Cichosz (pp. 267–299) counts verb-initial declaratives in the YCOE: 840 clauses in the corpus, of which Bede has 459 (more than half), and finds that V1 is mostly narrative but also marks known referents. Los and Coretta (pp. 301–338) compare Old English relatives introduced by se with those introduced by þe, and the authors find that se-relatives show similarities with the V2 relatives of Dutch and German.

Ideas

For Mova

The English chapters are 30. Pragmatics and discourse: overview, 36-discourse-relations.md and 38-dialogue-and-discourse-markers.md, and languages/en-x-emode/ for the Early Modern narrative texts. The code is world/src/narr.rs, world/src/events.rs, coref/src/sieve.rs, and the parser en/src/parse.rs for inverted word order. The measures are the agreement of the narrative cue with hand-marked event sequences in Early Modern texts, and the coreference F1 on CorefUD with and without the referent-repeat feature. The German and Icelandic chapters are not Mova's data; the English parts are.
