LCHAIM - Investigating Long Context Reasoning in Hebrew
What it is about
The authors build LCHAIM, a Hebrew natural language inference set of 8,325 premise–hypothesis pairs, by machine-translating the English ConTRoL dataset. ConTRoL has long premises taken from verbal-reasoning tests and needs coreferential, temporal, logical and analytical reasoning. On a 200-sample check, Amazon Translate beat DictaLM (accuracy 85.57%, fluency 82.53%, label validity 97.8% against 94%); a back-translation filter with sentence similarity below 0.75 removed the weakest pairs. Fine-tuned LongHero, first on Hebrew SNLI and then on LCHAIM, reaches 52% mean accuracy; AlephBERT reaches 42.6%; Gemma-9B reaches 56.15% zero-shot. Four Hebrew-speaking annotators score 84.97% on 200 test items, so the gap to humans is large.
Ideas
- I1. Use the reasoning types as a per-type test: the items are tagged as coreferential, verbal-logical, temporal/mathematical, information-integration and analytical. Report Mova's accuracy per type, so that a weak temporal reader cannot hide behind a good average.
- I2. A surface baseline first: the paper's Jaccard check (lexical overlap of 4.87% for entailment and 5.49% for contradiction pairs) shows these items cannot be passed by matching words. Any Mova NLI rule should be shown to work where overlap fails, not on easy pairs.
- I3. Quality gates for any translated test set: back-translation with a sentence-similarity threshold (0.75) and a small human rating with an agreement score (Krippendorff's alpha) are cheap checks Mova can run on its own Hebrew test sets.
For Mova
I1 and I2 apply to the test plan for the Modern Hebrew reader in 12. Mova and Modern Hebrew: where it stands, what it would need, with I2 as the baseline it must beat. I3 is a rule for how that plan builds any translated set, also in 12. Mova and Modern Hebrew: where it stands, what it would need. Use the set as a held-out test, not for tuning.
