Linguistic-functional Analysis of the Biblical Hebrew Lexemes ʿaṭarâ, keter and nezer
What it is about
A lexical study of the three Hebrew words for "crown", following Coseriu's structural semantics as practised in Florence (Zatelli). The Bible is first split into "functional languages", each meant to be uniform in time, place, register and style: archaic, early narrative, early poetry, Hosea, early legal-cultic, late narrative, late poetry, Job. For each word the author lists every occurrence by functional language with its syntax (regens or rectum of a construct, subject or object of which verb, which preposition, coordination, parallel words), then assigns each use to a semantic class (persons; human acts and behaviour; divine acts). ʿăṭārâ (23×) is spread across registers and often figurative ("a worthy wife is her husband's crown"); keter (3×) is only in Esther; nezer (25×) splits into "Nazirite consecration" (Num 6) and "crown/diadem", including the high priest's diadem in the Torah. The paper concludes on kingship and its symbols.
Ideas
- I1. A distributional profile per lemma, generated from the trees: for a noun, counts of its relations (nsubj/obj/obl/nmod as head or dependent of a construct), the verbs that govern it, the prepositions it takes, and its coordinated or parallel nouns. Add it to each Torah dictionary entry as evidence for the senses.
- I2. Split nezer in the dictionary by context: in Num 6 with the Nazirite vow vocabulary (נָזִיר, נדר) → "consecration/separation"; elsewhere in the Torah (Exod 29:6, 39:30; Lev 8:9, 21:12) with the priest's head and the holy diadem → "diadem". A test of whether context words separate two senses of one lemma.
- I3. A register label per Torah section (narrative, law, poetry, speech) as a cheap analogue of "functional language", so counts in the manual can be given per register, not only per book.
For Mova
I1 is an addition to macula dict (the Torah dictionary, The lexicon), computed from the trees. I2 is a polysemy rule for the dictionary and an example for the polysemy section of chapter 10. I3 touches 09-discourse.md (genres) and could be a column in the parse database.
