From polysemy to semantic change: remarks on the lexeme miṣwà in Biblical and Mishnaic Hebrew

What it is about

A corpus study of the noun מִצְוָה across historical-narrative Biblical Hebrew (standard and late) and Mishnaic Hebrew. The noun's normalised frequency rises from 5.27 to 8.91 per 10,000 words from standard to late narrative, mostly in the singular. The author analyses its syntagmatic frame — the verbs that govern it (keep, do, hear, transgress), the relative clauses with צוה that specify it, and its synonyms (statute, law, judgment) — and sorts its uses into sense-nodules. As a deverbal noun it keeps the valency of צוה (commander, addressee, content). The core biblical sense is "commandment" issued by God or a superior; in late books a peripheral, converse sense appears, "duty, obligation" seen from the side of the one bound by it, which becomes the main sense in the Mishnah ("religious duty").
