The syntax of comparison constructions in diachronic and dialectal perspective

What it is about

The paper asks where the comparison particle sits and how the standard of comparison attaches to the clause. Its data are mostly German: Old High German, Middle High German, Early New High German and dialects, with the particles als and wie. The author argues three points. First, the particle is higher than the complementiser, above the CP of the standard. Second, a standard may be a bare DP or PP, the "direct analysis", without an elided clause. Third, comparisons behave both like relative clauses and like coordination, which the author ties to an older correlative construction that was reanalysed. The evidence is mainly qualitative, drawn from examples in texts and dialects, and the author notes that much of the discussion "carries over to English".

The English chapters that fit are 23. Complementation, 24-coordination-subordination.md and 15-adjectives-adverbs.md (degree and comparison). The code is the parser en/src/parse.rs and gparse, the frame reader prag/src/frames.rs, and the comparison is in the world reader world/src/reader.rs. The measure is LAS and UAS on the comparative sentences of UD EWT, with a negative control: a shuffled-word comparative must score worse. Old High German and the dialects are not Mova's data; the paper is useful for English only through its argument.
