Neural Modeling for Named Entities and Morphology (NEMO2)
What it is about
In Hebrew, named-entity boundaries often fall inside a space-delimited token, because a preposition or the definite article is attached to the name. The authors annotate the Hebrew Treebank (6,143 sentences: 4,937 train, 500 dev, 706 test) twice, with token-level and morpheme-level NER labels. They compare token-single, token-multi and morpheme models, all Bi-LSTM-CRF. Morpheme-based NER is better. With gold morphology, the morpheme model reaches about 80.0 token-level F1 on dev, but with the predicted segmentation of a standard pipeline (YAP) it falls to about 72.8. The proposed hybrid lets the NER tags prune the morphological lattice before disambiguation; this recovers most of the gap (about 78.5 on dev) and beats all token-based models. An error analysis by unseen-entity type shows that names built from a known name plus a known prefix gain most from morpheme models.
Ideas
- I1. Prune, then disambiguate: a cheap tag layer rules out lattice paths that conflict with the entity tags before the parser picks the segmentation. In Mova this is a constraint on the lattice in
tools/hbo, with no neural model needed. - I2. A prefix table for names: strip the Hebrew prepositions (ב, ל, מ, כ), the conjunction ו and the definite article ה from a candidate token, then look up the remainder in a gazetteer. This is a deterministic answer to the compositional unseen names.
- I3. Report token-level and morpheme-level F1 separately, and split the scores by unseen-entity type (known, lexical, compositional, both). The same split works for the Mova segmenter evaluation.
For Mova
I1 goes into tools/hbo. I2 goes into Prepositions, prefixes, conjunctions and particles, with the gazetteer kept with the Hebrew reader. I3 is the measurement in tools/hbo. The paper is CC BY 4.0; only short phrases with a page may be quoted.
