COVID and staying home Lesson 12 of the medicine course of Mova's primary school: 14 sentences, each with its syntax tree and pragmatics. The lessons are written for Mova, and their agreed trees are part of Mova corpus 0.4 (CC BY-SA 4.0). How Mova does on its tests: the lesson at school .
1 In 2020 it spread across the whole world because nobody's body knew it yet: that is what a pandemic means. 2 People wore masks, kept apart and stayed home to slow it down until vaccines arrived, built on decades of earlier research and tested on tens of thousands of people. 3 Older people and those with other illnesses are more likely to get seriously ill, which is why we wash and gel our hands even when we feel fine. 4 A cold, flu and COVID can look alike; only a test can tell them apart. 5 COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, first found in 2019, which is where the 19 comes from, and in most children it is mild. 6 UK advice now is that children with mild symptoms can go to school if they have no fever and feel well enough; people who test positive are advised to stay home for a few days. 7 Older people and people with other health conditions are more likely to get seriously ill with COVID, partly because the body's defences work less well in old age; if a relative gets ill, it is not a child's fault. 8 Masks catch some of the droplets that carry viruses and do not stop you getting enough oxygen. 9 In 2020 and 2021 governments asked people to wear masks, keep apart and stay home to slow the spread before there were vaccines. 10 COVID can damage the smell-sensing cells in the nose; smell usually returns within weeks, but for some it takes months; losing smell does not mean you are seriously ill. 11 A lateral flow test looks for virus proteins in a nose or throat sample; a positive result is usually right, but a negative one can miss an early infection; the swab only goes a little way in and cannot touch the brain. 12 A pandemic is a new disease spreading across many countries because nobody has immunity yet. 14 Some people have tiredness, breathlessness or brain fog for months after COVID, called long COVID; doctors are still studying why. 15 Hand gel with alcohol kills many germs, but not all, such as norovirus; soap and water is better after the toilet or when hands are dirty. ← previous Spots and itches: chickenpox, head lice and friendsnext → Hay fever, allergies and EpiPens↑ back to Medicine This page in Markdown → https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/medicine/12-covid-and-staying-home/
