0 The Gospels tell of amazing things Jesus did: turning water into wine, feeding a huge crowd, calming a storm, healing the sick and even raising his friend Lazarus from death. 1 Christians call these miracles, and John's Gospel calls them «signs», because they point beyond themselves to who Jesus is and to God's care for people. 2 Many miracles happen to ordinary people in ordinary trouble: a wedding running out of wine, a hungry crowd, a frightened crew, a blind beggar shouting by the road. 3 Some show what people around Jesus did too: a boy shared his lunch, four friends carried a man to Jesus, and one healed man came back to say thank you. 4 For a child today the stories say: bring what you have, help your friends reach help, keep asking when others tell you to be quiet, and remember to say thank you. 5 Whether miracles really happen is something people disagree about; Christians believe God can act in the world, and the olympiad way is to talk about it with reasons and respect. 6 A miracle is an amazing event that Christians believe shows God's power at work beyond the ordinary. 7 John's Gospel calls Jesus' miracles «signs», because they point to who Jesus is. 8 At a wedding in Cana Jesus turned water into wine when the wine ran out; John calls it his first sign. 9 Jesus fed five thousand people with a boy's five loaves and two fish, and twelve baskets were left over. 11 Peter walked on the water towards Jesus but began to sink when he looked at the waves; Jesus caught him. 12 Blind Bartimaeus kept shouting for Jesus even when people told him to be quiet, and Jesus healed him. 13 Four friends lowered a paralysed man through a roof to Jesus, who forgave him and healed him. 14 Jesus healed ten men with leprosy, but only one, a Samaritan, came back to say thank you. 15 At the tomb of his friend Lazarus «Jesus wept», and then he called Lazarus back to life. 16 Christians treasure «Jesus wept» because it shows Jesus shares people's sadness when someone dies. 17 Christians believe God can act in the world; sceptics doubt that miracles happen; some Christians read some miracle stories symbolically. 18 This is disputed. ← previous Parables: the Talents, the Sower and morenext → The Sermon on the Mount↑ back to Religion ethics This page in Markdown → https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/religion-ethics/16-the-miracles-of-jesus/
