sense in the lessons
In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: An offering brought to God on the altar, such as an animal, grain, or wine, which is slaughtered or burned. It is not a giving-up of something. Interpretation: Sacrifices were brought by priests in the Tabernacle and later the Temple. After the Temple was destroyed, Jews hold that prayer takes the place of sacrifices, and they remember the offerings in the prayers. In the primary lessons: In stories heroes make sacrifices to save others. In everyday life you sacrifice time playing to study or save money. In history lessons ancient peoples offered sacrifices to gods. In chess a sacrifice loses a piece to win later. In baseball a «sacrifice» play gets the batter out but moves a runner on.
