In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: In the Torah, the engraving "like a signet" describes the names cut into the high priest's stones and the gold plate on his forehead reading "Holy to the LORD." Later, a king sealed the lions' den with his signet. A signet on God's hand is a picture of something very dear and chosen, as with Zerubbabel. Interpretation: Tradition says the engraved names and the forehead plate showed that the priest carried Israel before God and that the people belonged to Him. It reads Haggai's words as God choosing Zerubbabel and the line of David as precious to Him.
