noun (tidings — plural, old-fashioned)

meaning for a pupil

1) News or information, especially important news. tree →

2) In Christmas songs and the Bible: «good tidings» means good news. tree →

sense in the lessons

In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: In the prophets and psalms, tidings can be good news, such as the messenger on the mountains who announces peace, or bad news that the faithful need not fear. Interpretation: The messenger of good tidings is read by tradition as a picture of the hope of redemption and peace. In the primary lessons: An old-fashioned and literary word. You meet it in Christmas carols («Good tidings we bring to you and your kin», «O tidings of comfort and joy»), in the Bible (the angel brings «good tidings of great joy» to the shepherds), and in old stories where messengers bring tidings. In The Wind in the Willows the animals pass tidings along the river bank.
