republic

«republic» in Mova's school dictionary: a country where the people choose their leaders, and the… — its meaning for a pupil, its sense in the lessons and examples, with 5 sentences of Mova's corpora that use it.

part of speech

noun (a republic, republics; the Republic of …)

meaning for a pupil

1) A republic is a country where the people choose their leaders, and the head of state is usually an elected president, not a king or queen. tree →

2) «Republic» is part of the full name of many countries, such as the Republic of Ireland or the French Republic. tree →

sense in the lessons

In history and citizenship lessons pupils compare a republic with a monarchy (a country with a king or queen): the USA, France, Ireland and Ukraine are republics; the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand have a monarch. In history, ancient Rome was a republic before it had emperors. In the USA, «Republican» is also the name of one of the two main political parties, and in the USA the Pledge of Allegiance mentions «the Republic».

examples

  • The USA is a republic with a president. tree →
  • Ireland is a republic, but the UK has a king. tree →
  • The ancient Romans were once a republic. tree →
  • In a republic, the people vote for their leaders. tree →
  • Ukraine is a republic. tree →

note

Plural «republics». Adjective «republican». Capital R when it is part of a name: «the Republic of Ireland». Trap: not every republic is fair or free — some countries call themselves republics but do not have real elections. A «Republican» in the USA is a member of one party, not just someone who likes republics.
