Coordination Structures in Dependency Treebanks
What it is about
A dependency tree cannot show the symmetric relation between conjuncts without a convention, so every treebank picks one. The paper surveys these conventions: which node heads the coordination (the first conjunct, the conjunction, or a chain of conjuncts), how shared modifiers attach, and how labels mark conjunct roles. It proposes a taxonomy of the encodings and applies it to treebanks in 26 languages. It also reports empirical observations on how far one style can be converted into another. The authors do not decide which style parses best, but they note that coordination is among the most frequent sources of parsing errors.
Ideas
- I1.
en/src/convert.rs: add a converter option for the coordination style, record the source style in MISC, and measure on EWT train that a chained-style round trip returns the same arcs (target 100% unchanged). - I2.
en parse-eval: break LAS down by coordination, reporting the share of errors onconjandccarcs on EWT test; trainenon the chained and on the first-conjunct style and compare LAS, two runs each. - I3.
tools/treeagreerule R2 (chained conj): count, per 1,000 sentences, the coordinations in the Haiku silver trees that mix two styles, usingtreeagree check. - I4.
annotteacher instructions: ask the teacher to use one coordination style per corpus, and measuretreeagreegate violations on 300 sentences before and after.
For Mova
Touches 24. Coordination and subordination. The en parser and gparse both read the coordination style directly, so a style mix in the silver corpus would show as parser error on conj. Measure first the share of conj and cc errors on EWT test (I2), since it needs no training run.
