ACES: Translation Accuracy Challenge Sets for Evaluating Machine Translation Metrics
What it is about
ACES is a challenge set of about 36,500 contrastive examples over 146 language pairs and 68 phenomena. The phenomena come from the accuracy branch of the MQM ontology, extended with classes such as real-world knowledge and wrong language, from perturbations of characters and tokens up to discourse errors. Each example pairs a correct translation with a wrong one, and a metric passes when it scores the correct one higher. The data are partly synthetic, partly repurposed from contrastive test sets, and partly written by hand. The authors run the WMT22 metrics and baselines on it. No single metric wins across phenomena; many reference-based metrics pay too little attention to the source; their scores fall as the wrong translation becomes more similar to the reference; and reference-free metrics often prefer a copy of the source to a real translation of untranslated text. The recommendations are to combine metrics with different strengths, to weight the source more, and to model language-specific information beyond multilingual embeddings.
Ideas
- I1. A contrastive suite for the translator's accuracy errors: for each error the translator can make (thou against you, the name of the LORD, negation, number agreement, a dropped clause, an invented name), write a correct and a wrong output and count how often the scorer prefers the correct one. Keep it as a regression gate and add a red control (a shuffled lexicon).
- I2. A copy-source control: an output that repeats the source words must score below the real output. This checks that the scorer does not reward copying; the translator already reports a copy-the-source baseline to compare with.
- I3. A surface-overlap curve: vary how lexically close the wrong candidate is to the reference and plot the scorer's accuracy. If it falls steeply, the score leans on the reference too much. Use the Bible pairs.
- I4. Build the score as an ensemble of the two existing views (meta-world agreement and author delta), as the paper recommends, and measure it on the contrastive suite.
For Mova
The places are tools/translate (measure.rs and meta.rs), with the phenomena list taken from the divergence classes of tools/roundtrip. The paper tests metrics, not translators; here its structure becomes a test suite for the translator. It touches open problems 4 (function words, boundaries) and 5 (number and person), and the test data must come from sources the translator does not train on.
