Evaluating the Evaluation Metrics for Style Transfer: A Case Study in Multilingual Formality Transfer
What it is about
A meta-evaluation of automatic metrics for formality style transfer, the first multilingual one, covering English, Brazilian Portuguese, French and Italian. The authors list the metrics prior work used for three dimensions (style, meaning preservation, fluency) and measure how well each correlates with human judgements. The best style metric is a formality regression model on XLM-R used in zero-shot cross-lingual transfer. Binary formality classifiers over-predict the formal label and do not carry across languages. For meaning, chrF correlates best; BLEU, including its reference and self variants, correlates weakly. For fluency, XLM-R pseudo-log-likelihood wins. Zero-shot transfer beats machine translation for porting metrics. System-level pairwise rankings give a second check, where chrF and XLM-R are again the best.
Ideas
- I1. Calibration of judges. Before a judge is trusted, run it on human-written text of each author and count how often it assigns the target label. Report the over-prediction rate per class, as the paper does for binary formality classifiers.
- I2. Metric table against the residual. The translator's exact-mode residual in bits and normal-mode chrF can be correlated, over several author pairs, with the human or gold ranking of outputs. Report the correlation next to each new claim.
- I3. Pairwise ranking test. Take five systems per verse set (copy, word-by-word table, meta-world, delta, the MACULA gloss baseline) and count how many pairwise comparisons each metric gets right against gold. This is cheap and deterministic.
- I4. Regression judge for style. The paper prefers a graded score to a yes/no label. The delta judge could output a graded per-author score, with the ≥3-token rule applied to the score change.
For Mova
The paper covers the measure side of open problem 8, style deltas per style class. The judge in tools/translate is a binary decision and inherits the binary-classifier problem described in the paper. ChrF is the normal-mode meaning measure to adopt; exact match and divergence classes stay as they are. The pairwise ranking test fits measure.rs with no new model.
