Biblical Hebrew Wayyiqtol: A Dynamic Definition

What it is about

The paper argues that wayyiqtol cannot be reduced to one label ("past", "perfective", or "the narrative mainline form"). It lists the uses of the form in five blocks (consecution, taxis and tense, aspect, mood, discourse) with about fifty examples: plain past, present perfect, pluperfect, a few future and stative-present readings, and its narrative role. These uses are then ordered as stages on the typological "resultative" grammaticalization path (resultative → perfect → past, and the simultaneous path for stative roots), so the form is an old, far-advanced resultative gram; the consecutive sense comes from the fused conjunction *wa-. Wayyiqtol lacks the early stages (performative, resultative proper, evidential), which the younger qatal covers instead. Diachronic (*yaqtul) and comparative Semitic evidence is used as a check. No counts are given; the author defers the distribution of uses to future statistical work.

Ideas

For Mova

I1 and I4 are counts on the Torah trees with the JPS alignment, written into The verb (the aspect–tense debate) with their date. I2 and I3 are candidate rules in tools/macula/src/prag.rs or the world reader, feeding the timeline in 09-discourse.md (mainline vs background). The stative root list can live in the Torah dictionary as a flag.
