Towards the Construction of a WordNet for Old English
What it is about
A design paper, not a results paper. The authors plan an Old English WordNet (OldEWN) that starts from the lemmas and short English glosses of Clark Hall's Concise Anglo-Saxon Dictionary (second edition, 1916), which has about 36,744 lemma entries, many of them spelling variants. Candidate synsets are linked to the Open English WordNet with the Naisc system: a graph built from Old English collocations is compared with the modern WordNet graph, and link prediction ranks the candidates. Relations are copied across from the modern WordNet (the expand method), then checked by scholars. The distinctive choice is to treat figurative meaning as a first-class part of the structure. Sense-level links record metonymy and metaphor, and the Old English words are positioned against the Latin, Ancient Greek and Sanskrit WordNets. No accuracy figures are reported; the paper states that most of the work is still to be done.
Ideas
- I1.
world/src/dictionary.rs: add a sense-level shift relation as a Rust enum (for exampleMetonymy::Resultative,Metonymy::Causative), not a free string, and store it on senses that are linked to a neighbouring sense. Count how many school-dictionary senses could carry a shift. - I2.
en/src/dict.rs: a deterministic linker for a historical lemma with only a gloss. Rank candidate modern senses by the overlap of collocates in a corpus against the neighbourhood of each candidate in the lexicon, with ties broken in BTreeMap order. Measure precision at 1 on a held-out set of hand-matched pairs. - I3. Keep a negative control for the linker: a run with the collocates shuffled must score lower than the real run.
For Mova
Chapters: 10. Vocabulary: archaic words and false friends, 19. The lexicon: vocabulary, multiword expressions and register, 16. Derivation I: prefixes (sense shifts and compounds). Code: en/src/dict.rs, world/src/dictionary.rs, and the linker idea in the same crate. Measure: precision at 1 of the candidate senses and the share of school senses that carry a shift. The paper is non-commercial: use it for design only, and do not carry its data into a release.
