Generating Phrasal and Sentential Paraphrases: A Survey of Data-Driven Methods

What it is about

The survey covers paraphrase generation from data over two decades of work. It organises the methods by the resource they use: distributional similarity over one corpus; monolingual parallel corpora, where two translations of one source text give aligned sentences; monolingual comparable corpora, such as news on the same events; and bilingual parallel corpora, where pivoting over a foreign phrase gives English paraphrases. It also covers building paraphrase corpora, evaluation, and the use of statistical MT machinery for paraphrasing. The main conclusion is that the methods differ in both performance and ease of deployment, and that the right choice depends on the downstream application, so no single method wins. Paraphrase generation lacks the shared community evaluations that machine translation has, which makes methods hard to compare. The future trends it names are the web as a data source and the reuse of SMT components.

Ideas

For Mova

Most of the survey describes methods that the translator already uses in other forms: pivoting, parallel verses and alignment. Its taxonomy is the useful part, as a checklist for where each merge came from. No tool is named for it. Summary only.
