Supervised Noun Phrase Coreference Research: The First Fifteen Years

What it is about

A survey of supervised noun-phrase coreference research over about fifteen years. It follows three model families: the mention-pair model (with its instance creation, training and clustering steps such as closest-first and best-first clustering), entity-mention models that use cluster-level features, and ranking models (mention ranking and cluster ranking). It also covers knowledge sources (string match, syntax, semantics, discourse), corpora (MUC, ACE, OntoNotes, treebank-based sets) and scorers (MUC, B-cubed, CEAF). The main argument is that the mention-pair model decides from two mentions only, so it cannot use cluster-level information or rank competing antecedents. The paper runs no new experiment. It quotes the best published results: 71.3 MUC F on MUC-6 with automatic NPs, 63.4 on MUC-7, and 88.4 ACE-value on ACE with gold NPs.

Ideas

For Mova

The code is coref/src/sieve.rs, coref/src/mention.rs and coref/src/eval.rs. The chapter is 35. Reference and coreference. The measure is MUC, B-cubed and CEAF-e on the dev split with gold and with predicted mentions. Run it twice and check that the outputs are identical. Negative control: a shuffled set of candidate antecedents must score lower.
