Beyond Correlation: Interpretable Evaluation of Machine Translation Metrics
What it is about
Correlation with human judgement says little about what a metric score means. The paper evaluates metrics in two proxy scenarios: as binary classifiers for data filtering (good against bad, and perfect against other, labelled from WMT23 MQM with cut-offs set by MQM error weights), and as re-rankers, where the question is whether the top-scored candidate is truly among the best. It reports precision, recall and an F-score that weights precision above recall. On WMT23 Chinese-to-English, the best optimal F-scores for good against bad are about 81 to 82, and the perfect-against-other task is much harder, with the best near 68. Precision is usually below recall. Cut-offs chosen on the WMT22 set moved a lot compared with those chosen on WMT23, so optimal thresholds are unstable. For filtering the paper recommends MetricX-23-QE-XL among open metrics, and it finds that DA+SQM annotations agree poorly with MQM.
Ideas
- I1. A cut-off gate for the translator: label each candidate good or bad by its residual, choose the cut-off on a development set, and report precision, recall and an F-score that favours precision, so that keeping a bad output costs more than dropping a good one.
- I2. Re-ranking precision for choosing among the translator's variants (author deltas, lexicon versions): for each verse, a choice is correct if it is among the variants with the lowest residual. Report it per verse set.
- I3. A threshold stability check: fix the cut-off on one author pair, then measure how far it moves on another. Do not ship a cut-off that moves a lot.
- I4. Test any hand-made gold, such as checked verses, against a second annotation before it is used to rank anything, since the paper finds one human protocol unreliable.
For Mova
The places are tools/translate (measure.rs) and any filter that keeps or drops author deltas and lexicon merges (open problem 2). The MQM-style weights by error type map onto the residual classes: missing content weighs more than punctuation. The paper's metrics are neural and are not for Mova; the precision-first F-score and the threshold check are counts over a table.
