A Survey of Machine Translation: Its History, Current Status and Future Prospects
What it is about
A tutorial survey of machine translation for readers new to the field. It covers the enthusiasm of the 1950s, the disillusion of the 1960s and the ALPAC report of 1966, which led to the cancellation of most US projects. By 1975 no US government-funded projects were left, though MT systems were still in use, and the paper describes the main research groups and the techniques they used. The conclusions argue that the translation problem will not go away, that human effort is still needed short of full automation, that some applications will succeed on economic grounds alone, and that English is an unrepresentative language for computational linguistics. The survey also argues that translation is not simply understanding the source and reproducing it in the target. No measurements are given.
Ideas
- I1. Test beyond English: the paper says English has been the default for tools. Run the translator's residual with a non-English target standard built from the same Bible pairs, and record which residual classes grow. Any tool that only works for English would then show itself.
- I2. Report what is lost, not one score: for each direction, report what the meta-world drops when it reads the source (reader residual) and what the encoder adds that the source did not have (encoder residual). This keeps the "understanding versus reproduction" distinction in the numbers.
- I3. Economic success as a stated use: for each author standard, record the task it is fit for (for example a children's reading level), and report only the classes the standard handles, so the release does not claim more than the test shows.
For Mova
The survey gives the historical reason to test on several target languages, not only English, which the Hebrew reader begins to do. The residual split by reader and encoder is the measure that answers the paper's question about understanding versus reproduction. No factual claim from the survey is used in a result.
