75 Languages, 1 Model: Parsing Universal Dependencies Universally
What it is about
UDify is one multilingual model for all 124 UD v2.3 treebanks in 75 languages. Its encoder is multilingual BERT, fine-tuned on all treebanks concatenated, with simple per-task output layers for UPOS, features, lemmas (predicted as edit scripts) and dependencies. Each task learns its own weighting over the BERT layers, and the ablation shows that this beats a single global weighting and a plain sum of layers. The paper reports scores that match or exceed the state of the art on UAS and LAS, with the largest gains on low-resource languages; for some low-resource banks the mixed batches skew the model toward large treebanks, and fine-tuning each treebank from the saved UDify weights recovers most of the loss. Zero-shot results are reported for languages without training data.
Ideas
- I1. Balanced sampling per treebank in the
gparsetraining loop: sample banks by a sub-linear function of their size instead of by sentence, and measure LAS per bank on EWT test and on the other banks where the licence allows testing; the paper's cop-scriptorum failure is the case to watch. - I2. Per-task layer weights in
gparse: learn a softmax weighting over the four transformer layers separately for UPOS, features and arcs, against the last layer only; measure UPOS, UFeats and LAS on EWT test with the from-scratch encoder. - I3. Edit-script fallback for lemmas: classify the remaining lemma errors of
en/src/morph.rson EWT test into edit-script classes (suffix change, prefix change, stem change), and test a learned edit-script classifier only for words the dictionary and suffix rules miss.
For Mova
The code is gparse (the four-layer transformer and its training loop), en/src/morph.rs (lemmatizer) and the annot training batches. The chapter is 10. Word classes. The paper uses multilingual BERT, which Mova does not use; the batching and the per-task layer weights are the parts that carry over. Measure first: per-bank LAS under the current sampling, since the paper shows that a shared model's gains and losses depend on how banks are mixed.
