Evaluating Text Generation from Discourse Representation Structures
What it is about
The paper generates English from DRSs with a standard bi-LSTM sequence-to-sequence model, using a linearised DRS input and comparing a character-level decoder with a word-level one. Reference-based BLEU looks encouraging, but the authors argue that it only sees surface overlap. They therefore build five challenge sets from Parallel Meaning Bank test items, each made by a minimal change to the DRS and a matching hand edit of the reference: tense change, polarity (negation) change, singular and plural switch, unseen named entities, and unseen quantities. Each set has 50 to 200 items. The character-level decoder handles unseen names better than the word-level one, because a word-level model has never seen the name's pieces. They also propose a metric, ROSE, that scores these phenomena separately. The set-up shows that a good BLEU can hide a systematic failure on one phenomenon.
Ideas
- I1. Minimal-pair challenge sets for the translator: from Bible verses, make one-edit variants that change tense, negation, number or a name, and edit the expected output by hand. Score whether each change appears correctly. Five sets of 50 to 200 items, as in the paper, give a dev-only gate.
- I2. Name handling: a proper name unseen in the lexicon should be passed through character by character. Test the translator's name copy on the name challenge set against a word-level copy.
- I3. Per-phenomenon scores: count how many items of each phenomenon are right, instead of one BLEU. This matches the residual classes of the translator, which already count lexical, construction, order and morphology errors separately.
- I4. Over-generation check: the paper notes repeated words in output. A count of repeated tokens per sentence is a cheap gate to run alongside the challenge sets.
For Mova
The challenge sets fit tools/translate/measure.rs, and the name rule fits the copy path in tools/translate. The metric is not needed as such: the residual classes already do the per-phenomenon counting. The minimal-pair method is the part to adopt.
