sense in the lessons

In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: In the Prophets and Writings, confounded means ashamed, disappointed and put to shame. It describes people whose hopes fail, or makers of idols who are shown to be wrong. Interpretation: Tradition reads these verses as teaching that those who trust in idols or in empty hopes will be put to shame. In the primary lessons: In old books and The Wind in the Willows, gentlemen like Toad say «confounded» as a mild swear word: «that confounded policeman!». In science and news, a result can confound the experts, meaning it goes against what they expected. «Confound it!» was an old way of saying «Bother!».
