sense in the lessons

In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: Here it means shut or blocked, as springs of water were stopped, or ended, as rain stopped. In the Prophets and Writings it also means to shut ears so as not to listen, and to stop lies by silencing the mouth of those who speak them. Interpretation: The people who "stopped their ears" are read as refusing to hear the prophets. Hezekiah stopping the spring of Gihon is read as a wise act to protect Jerusalem's water in time of siege. In the primary lessons: In stories, «stopped» marks a sudden change: «Suddenly the music stopped». In science, a moving object stopped by friction or a force; in maths problems about journeys, «stopped for 10 minutes» means add 10 minutes to the time and no distance in that time. In safety, look and wait until the car has stopped before crossing. Phrases: «stopped to» (paused to do), «stopped doing» (no longer did).
