sense in the lessons

In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: Straw is the dry stalks of grain left after harvest, used for animal feed and bricks. In the Prophets and Writings it is a picture of something weak or worthless, as when Job says the crocodile treats iron as straw, and Jeremiah asks what the straw has to do with the wheat. In Isaiah's peaceful future the lion eats straw like the ox. Interpretation: The Egyptians took away the straw needed for making bricks, but the Israelites still had to make the same number. Tradition sees this as one of the cruelest steps in the slavery, which Passover remembers. Jeremiah's picture is read as saying that false dreams are straw but God's word is grain, and Isaiah's lion is read as a sign of peace in the days of the Messiah. In the primary lessons: Maths: drinking straws counted in packs; bales of straw on a farm. Farming: straw for bedding, hay for food. Environment: plastic straws harm sea life; use paper or reusable ones. Stories: the three little pigs built a house of straw.
