circuit
part of speech
noun (a circuit, circuits)
meaning for a pupil
1) An electrical circuit is a complete loop of wires and parts that electricity flows round, from the power source and back again. tree →
2) A circuit is a route or track that goes round in a loop, like a racing circuit. tree →
3) A circuit is one trip round such a loop. tree →
4) Circuit training is exercise where you go round a set of different activities. tree →
sense in the lessons
In science, a simple circuit has a battery (cell), wires and a bulb, buzzer or motor; the circuit must be complete (closed) for electricity to flow; a switch opens or closes it. A series circuit has one path; a parallel circuit has more than one. Symbols are used in circuit diagrams. In PE, circuits are rounds of exercises. Phrases: «complete circuit», «open/closed circuit», «short circuit», «circuit diagram», «series circuit», «parallel circuit».
examples
- The bulb lights up only when the circuit is complete. tree →
- Draw a circuit diagram with a cell, a switch and a bulb. tree →
- If you open the switch, the circuit is broken. tree →
- We ran three circuits of the field. tree →
- The racing cars sped round the circuit. tree →
- In PE we did circuit training. tree →
- A short circuit can start a fire. tree →
- Never make circuits with mains electricity; only use batteries. tree →
note
Plural circuits. The «ui» sounds like «i»: «SUR-kit». In science, a gap anywhere stops the whole series circuit. Mains electricity from the wall is dangerous; school circuits use low-voltage batteries.
