0 Bees and wasps sting to protect themselves and their nest, not to hunt people, so they rarely sting if they are left alone. 1 A honeybee's sting has tiny hooks like a fish-hook; it gets stuck in our skin and tears away from the bee, so the bee dies, while a wasp's smooth sting can be used again and again. 2 If a bee or wasp buzzes near you, stay calm and walk slowly away: swatting and flapping makes it feel attacked and more likely to sting. 3 After a bee sting, scrape the stinger out quickly with a fingernail or a card, wash the place and hold something cold on it to ease the pain and swelling. 4 For most people a sting is just painful, but some people are allergic: if someone's face, lips or throat swell, or they find it hard to breathe or feel faint, call the emergency number at once and use their adrenaline pen if they have one. 5 For example, wasps love sweet drinks at picnics, so a wasp can crawl into an open can and sting a child's mouth: always look before you sip. 6 A boy in Kansas was stung by a bee and his lips and throat began to swell; his mum used his allergy pen and called 911, and doctors said acting fast saved him. 7 A girl in Kent swatted at a wasp nest with a stick; dozens of wasps came out and stung her many times before she got indoors. 8 Bees and wasps sting mainly to defend themselves and their nest. 9 A honeybee leaves its barbed stinger in the skin and dies after stinging. 11 Swatting at a bee or wasp makes a sting more likely. 12 A bee stinger should be scraped out quickly, because it keeps pumping venom for a short while. 13 A cold pack helps reduce the pain and swelling of a sting. 14 Swelling of the face or throat, trouble breathing or feeling faint after a sting is an emergency. 15 People with a serious sting allergy may carry an adrenaline pen, such as an EpiPen, given into the outer thigh. 16 A sting inside the mouth or throat is dangerous because the swelling can block breathing. 17 Wasps are attracted to sweet food and drinks. 18 Never poke, throw things at or try to knock down a bees' or wasps' nest. 19 Bees are very important because they carry pollen between flowers and help plants make fruit and seeds. 20 Some people have a severe allergy to stings that can make their throat swell and needs emergency help at once. 21 Disturbing a nest makes wasps or bees attack in large numbers. ← previous Understanding catsnext → Snakes, spiders and scorpions↑ back to Everyday This page in Markdown → https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/everyday/24-bees-and-wasps/
