0 Every living thing goes through a life cycle: it begins, grows, becomes an adult, makes young of its own, and in the end dies, while its young start the cycle again. 1 A frog starts as an egg in a pond, hatches into a tadpole that swims and breathes with gills, then grows legs, loses its tail and becomes a frog that can live on land. 2 A butterfly has four very different stages: egg, caterpillar (larva), chrysalis (pupa) and adult; this big change is called metamorphosis. 3 A chicken hatches from an egg as a fluffy chick that already looks like a small hen, and simply grows; a bean plant grows from a seed into a plant that flowers and makes new beans. 4 A caterpillar eats and eats, growing many times bigger, then inside the chrysalis its body is rebuilt into a butterfly with wings. 5 A life cycle is the series of changes a living thing goes through from birth to adult and new young. 6 A frog's life cycle is egg, tadpole, froglet and adult frog. 7 Frogs lay their eggs in clumps of clear jelly with a black dot in each egg; this is called frogspawn. 8 Tadpoles live in water and breathe with gills. 9 Adult frogs breathe with lungs and through their skin. 10 A butterfly's life cycle is egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and adult butterfly. 11 Metamorphosis is a big change in body shape during an animal's life; frogs, butterflies, beetles and bees all go through it. 12 A caterpillar does most of the eating and growing in a butterfly's life. 13 A chicken's life cycle is egg, chick and adult hen or rooster. 14 A hen's egg must be kept warm for about three weeks before the chick hatches. 15 A bean plant's life cycle is seed, seedling, adult plant with flowers, and pods with new seeds. 17 Most seeds do not need light to germinate, because they use their own food store at first. ← previous Groups of animals and how to tell them apartnext → Food chains and food webs↑ back to World This page in Markdown → https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/world/25-life-cycles/
