0 Islam is a faith in one God, called Allah in Arabic; its followers are Muslims, and the word Islam means "submission", giving your life to God. 1 Muslims believe God gave his message to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in Arabia in the 600s, and that this message is written in the Qur'an. 2 Muslims live their faith every day through the Five Pillars: saying their faith, praying five times a day, giving to the poor, fasting in Ramadan and, if they can, making the pilgrimage to Mecca. 3 Christians and Muslims share a lot: one God, prayer, care for the poor, and great respect for Jesus, whom Muslims call Isa and honour as a prophet, though not as the Son of God. 4 For a Christian child today this means you may have Muslim friends who fast, pray and keep halal food, and the right thing is to learn what they really believe and never to judge them by the worst things a few people do. 5 Islam teaches belief in one God, called Allah in Arabic. 6 Followers of Islam are called Muslims, and Islam is the second largest religion in the world. 7 Muslims believe Muhammad is the last prophet, and many say "peace be upon him" after his name. 8 Muslims do not make pictures of the Prophet Muhammad, as a sign of respect. 9 The Qur'an is the holy book of Islam; Muslims believe it is God's word, and it is recited in Arabic. 10 The Five Pillars are: the declaration of faith, prayer five times a day, giving to the poor (zakat), fasting in Ramadan and the pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj). 11 A mosque is the Muslim place of prayer; people take off their shoes and pray side by side in rows facing Mecca, the holy city of Islam, led by an imam; standing shoulder to shoulder shows that everyone is equal before God. 12 In the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset; young children, the sick and travellers do not have to fast. 13 Eid al-Fitr is the joyful festival at the end of Ramadan. 14 Halal means allowed; halal food has no pork and Muslims do not drink alcohol. 15 Muslims honour Jesus (Isa) as a great prophet born of the virgin Mary, but do not believe he is the Son of God. 16 Islamophobia is fear or hatred of Muslims; most Muslims reject violence done in the name of Islam. ← previous Judaismnext → Hinduism and Sikhism↑ back to Religion ethics This page in Markdown → https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/religion-ethics/31-islam/
